No, an apple tv doesn't take the place of the cable box, because there is a lot of stuff on cable that isn't available via the sources that you can run through an apple tv. Apple tv has nothing to do with cable or over the air channels. It is all about streaming from your Itunes, library or from netflicks or youtube.
