I've never used spacebar, try control-r?

You may also wish to check how the keyboard shortcuts are defined or perhaps 
you may wish to customise these particularly the "Global Hotkeys" which may 
make your life even easier.

I must say though that I'm surprised people don't get an extra sound card or 
device when recording from cassette or whatever, they're dirt cheap these days 
and you don't have to pay a lot of money for something of reasonable quality 
these days, an Imic is a great example of this <smile>.
