I use Switch from http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html to do exactly this. I've been using the free version for quite a long time, but I think you now get a free trial of Switch Plus which you can downgrade to the free version after the trial period. Note that AVI to MP3 conversion is in the free version of Switch.
