If I recall correctly, the Olympus 30/40/50 recorders have
automatic-gain-control, which means sudden, loud sounds (just like
thunder) would probably get distorted.
I believe the model 71 has the option for no AGC. I don't know about the
DS520 (or is it 540?)

Well, If you want to record thunder then you should come to thunder bay.
Our thunder is so loud that it rattles windows and scares dogs under the
