first are you sure that vista recognized your usb sound card?

Hey guys,
I have a laptop with vista, and a usb sound card. I am trying to record
with no luck and it's frustrating.
It's a USB sound card.
Here is what i have done, i plugged in the USB, and plugged the output
from
my CD player in to the input line in of the sound card.
I thn put the headphones in the headphone jack, and played, and heard
nothing.
It seems to be picking up the mic from the laptop but that's it.
I tried in gold wave hitting control f11 to switch sound cards, but no
luck.
I figured this would have been a lot easier. Anyone have any ideas?
