If you're going to do something like this then I can't really see anything to be gained over using APe then you'd get with FLAC, there are several problems with APE, one being that its not a standard format across platforms, it requires a lot of processing power to decode and so on so given that, why not settle for FLAC or - if you want better lossless compression again - why not Wavepak.
