Hi, I have Itunes and have bought tracks from Itunes but have never played them anywhere else, so might be wrong in what I'm about to say. I imagine that you can play the tracks you download from itunes in a player other than Itunes - Winamp, say. If that is the case and you're just looking to play them on a PC and not an Ipod, personally I wouldn't bother with Itunes. I have it, but I don't like it; some people do like it, but even so there is new stuff to learn and if all you want to do is play tunes personally I wouldn't bother.
