how do we know which firmware we have for the NLS players?
and if we have the wrong firmware how do we update it?

Jason,

Assuming you have the current version of the firmware, hold down the play
button for several seconds. The player will speak. You can then switch
between books by pressing the left and right arrows either side of the play
button. When you hear the title you're looking for, press play as you
normally would (not for several seconds) either once or twice and it will
start.
