Good morning List, Here is the promised information.
A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully accessible to blind people. This phone was from Verizon and contained the Talks program. The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech program cost $249 with a 2 year contract. According to Verizon, the Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this. Of course I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all it had to offer. I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an alarm or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't happen. I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a few issues. It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks program. This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of all the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of phones and different speech programs. Through my searching, I discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone was not the fully functioning version of the program. I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after hearing of a program called: Mobile Speaks. This program can be used on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's. It works with several different service providers and costs about $300.00. I was able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to offer. This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from Verizon. I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new phone. Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work with as many smart phones and with as many carriers. I might also point out that when you purchase a Smart Phone from Verizon that has come out after November of last year, that you must have a Data package with your current plan. A Data package gives you access to the Internet and E-mail from your phone. This is not meant for everyone, but if you think there might be a reason for this function, then a Windows Mobile device running a speech program might be what you need.
