An interesting way to test this would be to play a song to someone using say Foobar, Winamp and Windows Media Player without them knowing which player was playing the song and then see if they could identify the players correctly. I certainly don't think I could tell what software player was playing a file just by listening to it. This raises the issue of whether a software player sounds better to someone simply because they like that player better. I don't have all the answers to this debate but it raises some interesting issues.
