I'm not sure what your specifications are for a recorder. The transom website for public radio producers and reporters did a review of the Sony PCM D50 earlier this year. It can be found at:

Neal Ewers did a review on this recorder on Blind Cool Tech and found it to be highly accessible offering incredible results with low background noise equivalent to that of minidisc recorders, which were a broadcast standard. give Neal's review a listen as well as the audio files on the page with the review and hear the difference for yourself.
