Make sure you're in the right Winamp window when you press the space bar. I'm not sure what it's called, but it works for me in the window which has the name of the track in the title bar. You can use the control-tab key sequence to cycle through your winamp windows. You may also have problems if you have the notice about a new update popping up.

Actually I've found that this space bar pausing only works when you have
Jaws loaded. If you unload Jaws, only the C key pauses, and the space bar
does nothing.
