Well, I lucked out! One of our counselors at work got one over the weekend and I got to spend a few minutes with it today.
When you install the software on your computer and connect the IPod Nano there is a setup process that asks a bunch of questions and adds the "Enable Speech" icon to the general settings in the IPod. From then on the speech is using whatever synthetic voice is on your computer to create the speech for your IPod Nano.
