The problem is, that technology--set-top boxes, receivers, DVD
players--they got down pat. No need to reinvent wheels there. The
adaptations we require are mostly firmware rewrites, along with a few
custom manufactured buttons with tactile markings on them. Sans the
tactile buttons, the best thing that could ever happen to us is that
all devices had user-replaceable firmware in them. Then any Tom, Dick
or Harry could come along with custom rewrites of firmware for
virtually anything on the market that runs on a processor of any kind,
and you could have a firmware-of-the-week thing goin' on. The problem
with this solution is that sometimes, such as in the case of
coffeepots and other such unitelligent devices, firmware isn't used,
so this would only benefit higher-end things. But oh, what a benefit
it would be! Come to think of it, that's what Java was supposed to
solve--the ability to control virtually any device you could put on a
network that could be controlled in some way. Never happened.
