Rockbox is open source, so there is no price. Getting it installed and working takes some research and effort though. It's not like installing an application for Windows. You can check it out, as well as find a list of supported players, at rockbox.org.
As far as inexpensive, smaller off the shelf players, I'd recommend the 1GB Zen Stone. It doesn't talk, but there's no display, so it's totally accessible. It also doesn't require any proprietary software to copy music to the player. It runs about $30. There are other Zen Stones, so make sure you're getting the one without a screen. It also doesn't come with an FM radio. Once you get into the Zen Stones that have displays and FM radios then their accessibility becomes problematic.
