Go back to the days of cassette dekcs for example, put a tape into a deck , start recording without optimizing the deck to the tape and see what happens. Sure! You'll probably get a reasonable recording if the tape is a reasonable tape and the deck a reasonable deck but you won't get a "near perfect" recording for that blind of tape unless you "calibrate" the deck to suit the characteristics of the tape you're using. The whole idea of CD Ripping in my view (and Audio CD copying) is to get a "perfect rip" or a "perfect copy", see a previous message I've written for more on this topic.
