Hi Mike,
Hmm. I have a Windows xp Media Center Edition as well. In run, are you just 
typing sndvol32? To get to the sound recording volume, it is exactly like 
this.:
sndvol32/r
inputted into the windows run box.

Another idea is to go into your control panel, which a quick shortcut is hit 
Windows+r and type control panel. Then, go to sounds and audio devices, 
select your default microphone there under audio tab and under the voice 
tab. That should do the trick. Good luck!
