Here is the information in the help file for the Amazon Downloader. They do
not mention Winamp at all, but I use it with no problem to play my songs. I
recommend turning off the help balloons and also setting the default player
to the "Do Nothing" option in preferences unless you want the downloader to
import stuff. Remember that by default, the player comes up minimized in
the system tray, so if you're not sure you have it installed, check the
system tray. Also, this app is basically a download manager (which actually
has a menu bar that you can get to by wacking the alt key) and you really
shouldn't have to interact with it much at all except while you are making
the actual purchase. Once your song/album is downloaded, you can say bye
bye to the downloader and just go to the default folder where it downloaded
to, find your song, and play it or move it to another location just like you
would do with any typical MP3. I hope this info is helpful.

Using the Amazon MP3 Downloader
The Amazon MP3 Downloader is designed to streamline the process of
downloading and organizing the music you purchase. Using the Downloader
allows you to download entire albums with one click, queue up as many songs
or albums for download as you like, and pause, cancel, and resume downloads.
As an added benefit, the Downloader can automatically import the songs you
download from Amazon MP3 into your iTunes or Windows Media Player library.

System Requirements
PC: Windows XP or Vista
Mac: Mac OS X 10.4 or higher

If you use Linux, you can currently buy individual songs. A Linux version of
the Amazon MP3 Downloader is under development, and when released will allow
entire album purchases.

Browser Requirements
The Amazon MP3 Downloader works with your system's default Web browser. If
you attempt to use a browser other than the one set as the default for your
computer system when purchasing from Amazon MP3, you may encounter issues
initiating or completing your download.

For example, if you install the Amazon MP3 Downloader using an alternate
browser (e.g. Firefox) that is not your system's default browser (e.g.
Internet Explorer), your default browser will launch after the Downloader
installs and you will not be able to complete purchases from your alternate
browser.

To avoid these issues, we strongly recommend that you set the browser you
plan to use for Amazon MP3 purchases as your system's default browser if it
isn't already. Please refer to your browser's Help section for information
on designating it as your system's default browser.

You can also enable your browser to work with the Amazon MP3 Downloader by
visiting the Downloader install page at the URL below and following the
instructions in the "Troubleshooting" section:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/help/amd.html/

Installing the Downloader
You will automatically be prompted to install the Amazon MP3 Downloader when
you make your first purchase, but we recommend that you install the
application before making a purchase.

To install the Amazon MP3 Downloader:
1. Click here to visit the Amazon MP3 Store
or select "MP3 Downloads" from our department listings on Amazon.com.
2. Click the "Install the MP3 Downloader" link in the navigation bar at the
top of the page.
3. Click the Download Now button.
4. Run the installer application after the download has completed.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.

After installation completes, the Downloader will automatically open a new
page using your default browser, and you will be offered to download a song
free of charge. Be sure to open the .amz file if prompted and configure your
browser to always use the Downloader to open .amz files. This ensures that
your
Downloader will open automatically on all subsequent purchases from Amazon
MP3. The .amz file type activates the Downloader and initiates your MP3 file
downloads.

After your free song downloads, the Downloader will open your iTunes or
Windows Media Player (if you have either installed) and will automatically
import the downloaded song so you can start listening to it. See Importing
into iTunes or Windows Media Player
 for more information.

Using the Downloader
The Amazon MP3 Downloader is a helper application that works in conjunction
with Amazon.com. If you purchase an entire album, downloads must be
completed at the time of purchase using the Amazon MP3 Downloader. If you
choose to purchase individual songs, use of the Downloader is recommended
but not required.
If you choose not to use the Downloader for purchasing individual songs, you
will be prompted to save each song to your computer using your browser's
standard dialog boxes.

Launching the Downloader
The first time you purchase an album, you will be prompted to install the
Downloader before you can complete your purchase. After you install the
Downloader, it will launch automatically each time you make a purchase. You
will only need to launch the Downloader manually from your computer if you
pause or cancel a download you started on Amazon.com and wish to resume that
download at another time. In Windows, the default location is "All Programs
> Amazon > Amazon
MP3 Downloader." On a Mac, select Amazon MP3 Downloader from your
Applications folder.

Downloader Command Buttons
After a download begins, the Downloader will display the album and
individual tracks that are queued for download. When tracks are listed in
the Downloader window, the commands listed below will be available depending
on what items are selected and the download status of those items. If a
command is not available
for the selected item, the button will be grayed out.

Pause Downloads: Pauses the download of all albums or songs if any downloads
are in progress. Paused items will be available in the Downloader even if
you close and restart the application, but we do not recommend pausing
downloads unless you plan to resume the downloads within 3 hours. If you
have difficulty
resuming paused downloads, please contact Customer Support.

Resume Downloads: Resumes downloading any previously paused songs.
Clear Completed: Removes downloaded albums and songs from the download
window. If a download was incomplete because you chose to cancel or pause
it, selecting
this option will not remove those items from your download list. All
completed downloads will clear when you close the application.
Listen to Selected: Launches your default media player and plays the
selected song. If an album is selected, choosing this option will open the
Amazon MP3 folder so you can choose from available tracks.
Show Downloads (Windows)/Reveal in Finder (Mac): Opens the default download
folder where your Amazon MP3 purchases are stored on your computer. The
default folder is "Amazon MP3" in your My Music folder (Windows) or your
Music folder (Mac). See
Locating Downloaded Songs for more information.

Importing into iTunes or Windows Media Player
If you have iTunes or Windows Media Player installed on your computer, the
Amazon MP3 Downloader will automatically launch the application designated
as the default MP3 player and import your songs into your music library. If
neither application is installed, the Downloader will simply save the
downloads to your default Output Directory.

To set the default importing behavior:
1. Launch the Amazon MP3 Downloader.
2. Select "File/Preferences . . ." from the Downloader menu.
3. Choose the desired default player under the "Media Library" section.
Choose "Do nothing" if you do not wish to use the import function.

The options for "Add it to iTunes" or "Add it to Windows Media Player" will
only appear if those applications are installed on your computer system.

A Note about Using iTunes
In certain rare cases, the Downloader may fail to import songs into iTunes
due to potential issues with the installed version of iTunes. The Downloader
should provide a message in the right-hand corner of your screen that it
failed to add songs to iTunes. If this occurs, we recommended you visit
www.iTunes.com
and install the most recent version of the application. After reinstalling
iTunes, please restart your computer, launch iTunes, and accept Apple's
terms of use before attempting to use the Amazon MP3 Downloader to import
songs to iTunes.
You may also wish to add your Downloader's Output Directory to your iTunes
settings. To do this, launch iTunes and select the "Add Folder to Library"
option
from the menu and select the folder to which your songs download. The
default folder is called "Amazon MP3" and resides in the "My Music" folder
in Windows or the "Music" folder on a Mac.

Locating Downloaded Songs
When the Amazon MP3 Downloader saves songs to your computer, it saves them
to a folder called "Amazon MP3" by default. This folder is located within
the "My Music" folder in Windows or the "Music" folder on a Mac. We
recommend using the default folder, but you can change this setting if you
wish.

If you did not use the Downloader to save your music, you can find files by
searching for ".mp3" on your computer or by checking the default save
location for your Web browser.

To change the default Downloader save location:
1. Launch the Amazon MP3 Downloader.
2. Select "File/Preferences . . ." from the Downloader menu.
3. Click the Change button in the Output Directory section.
4. Select a folder from the list.
5. If you wish to create a subfolder inside the selected folder, click the
Make New Folder button.
6. Click the OK button when finished.

Downloader Menu Options
The following options are available in the Downloader menus:
File/Preferences: Opens the Preferences window where you can adjust the
Downloader settings. More information is available below under "
Changing Downloader Preferences."
File/Exit: Closes the Downloader application.
Help/Show Help: Opens the Downloader application Help page in a Web browser
window.
Help/Check for Updates: Checks Amazon.com for a newer version of the
Downloader application.
Help/About: Displays version information for the Downloader application.

Changing Downloader Preferences
To access the Downloader Preferences, choose "File" from the menu and then
click on the "Preferences" option. Here's a list of the settings you can
customize:
Output Directory: This option allows you to change the location of your
stored downloads from the default directory. Click the Change button to
choose or create a new folder. Click the OK button when you are finished.
Media Library: Select a supported media player from the pull-down menu if
you want your purchases added to your media library automatically. The media
players currently supported are iTunes and Windows Media Player. If you
choose to "Do Nothing," your music files will be stored in the "Amazon MP3"
folder
and can be added to your desired media library manually.
Automatically check for updates: Clicking the box next to this option will
automatically enable the Downloader to check for critical updates when you
open the application.
Minimize to notification tray (Windows Only): Selecting this option
minimizes the Downloader into your Windows system tray to on your taskbar.
If you choose this option you can also enable "Show Balloon Tips" so that
you will see notifications about Downloader activity. The additional option
"Automatically minimize when started from browser" is selected by default
when you enable the "Minimize to notification tray" option.
