Here's a suggestion.  Try to see if your wmp is not muted.  I think that's 
the f9 or f10 key.

yeh and the crazy thing is i've checked firewall, explorer settings and
every thing else i can think of and nothing makes sence. i had my wife who
is sighted look at it and she said it was playing because the time was
advancing but no matter what i've tried i get no sound.
