While there are alternatives available for playing these files, as already 
has been outlined, here is something that you might wish to consider as an 
instructor.
Sure, they do exist; but also Real Player is the Real McCoy, so to speak, 
and was designed from the ground up to work with everything RP is supposed 
to work with.
Hence, a student, while certainly able to use these substitutes (generic 
alternatives), he/she also should be prepared that there is the 
possibility that some things may not work as expected; and these things 
might not be obvious ones at this point.
The current version of RP works well with current versions of WE and JFW; 
and, as an instructor,
you may be causing untold frustration to yourself and creating problems to 
solve later if the generic choice is made.
Hence, if I were in your shoes, I'd strongly urge your student to stick 
with the namebrand rather than the generic.
