since I see that this question hasn't gotten an answer, I will tell you what
I know about it.  It seems to work the same way in versions 10 and 121.

You can't use the shift-ctrl-g keystroke to achieve variable rates of speed.
If you want more speed than this shortcut allows, first go into the view
menu.  In the enhancements submenu, make sure that show Enhancements and
Play Speed are shceked.  Now you simply tab a bunch of times.  Eventually
you come to buttons for slow and fast, then a button for snapping to common
speeds which I haven't played with.  finally you come to a slider that will
give you a percentage of speed.  Reading with JFW, the default seems to be
twelve per cent.  Hit up arrow to increase, realizing that it isn't
difficult to get going too fast.  the process is a little  clunky but it is
possible to get a speed higher than the default "fast" speed by doing what I
just described.
