changing the focus of the recent total Recorder question, I want to
offer some disquieting news.

Looking at the question of how best to capture Internet audio, the
two solutions I know are Total Recorder and Replay a/v. I know there
are others, but the4se I know. I started out as a fan of this
program, switched to Replay a/v, then switched back. Total Recorder
has been progressively improving.

problems will come for those who upgrade to Vista. I don't have the
message from High Criteria handy, but its gist is on their web
site. Because of changes in how Vista handles audio content, Total
Recorder will lose flexibility. If the audio player itself does not
let you change sound drivers, you won't be able to use Total Recorder
to capture it. In practical terms, they told me, one can, under
Vista, capture the output of windows Media player and winamp streams,
but not of RealAudio streams. I don't know whether Real Alternative
is any better in this regard.

Replay A/v has the possible advantage that the sound does not pass
through the sound card in order to be recorded. People at Appliant
tell me that it works under vista.

So this may be a factor to consider in purchasing decisions.
