When you press control r, the record dialog box will come up. If you press the spacebar or the letter to begin recording, the dialog box will change but remain on the screen. The cursor will remain on the record button.
If you press the tab key twice, you will move to the close button and you can stop recording by pressing the spacebar on the close button. If my memory serves me correctly, if you press the spacebar on the record button while you are recording, the recording is paused and is resumed again when you press the spacebar again. However, don't hold me to that because it is not a function that I use. A little experimentation should should establish how it works.
