Hi Ted. To the general users it really means nothing at all as you would only really be able to change the encoder software if you were a very skilled programmer with a degree in psycho acoustics. When software is open source it may be developed by a large number of developers all contributing freely. This is the opposite to proprietary software which is software where only the executable program is made available such as media player and the source is not made available by Microsoft for any Tom, Dick or Harry to have a hack at it.
