The very best thing you can do is learn how to put everything together on your own server as it were, and then when you do your audition for a station, you'll have everything all put together. You don't have to do it this way but I've found that it's best to have everything all in a row. How I do it is different than others do it, but I use the what you hear option of my sound card, and that allows me to talk over the music and with keystrokes from within Winamp I can very easily control the volume of the music. Others use the line recording plugin, which doesn't allow you to talk over the top of the music but still gives you a reasonably professional sound. Yet another option is to use a mixer board. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but others have so they can comment further. As for a station, that's up to you. You can either join one, or just do it on your own. If you're only broadcasting for a couple hours a week, I can't see anyone coming after you and making you pay out the nose.
