hi, The advantage of direct sound output is that you don't have to worry about your synth going louder than winamp, so you can, say, listen to music in the background. I believe that direct sound output has more configuration options than wave. Direct sound also takes up less CPU, I think or it might be the other way around. I use it exclusively.
