It's a countdown timer that should be there for every recording you insert, whether it's one of the 48 carts or a ten-minute interview file. Apparently there's a bar graph which indicates completeness of the recording, as well as a graphic symbol which changes from a diamond to something else when it's getting on to the end of the dropped-in file.
