Paul. Is your sound distorted all the time or only during loud passages? Does the source (MP3 or CD) make a difference? Have you tried the Windows volume control and mixer?
There is also an extra set of controls for the Realtek ac'97 which includes speaker configuration, effects, and hardware equalizer. Go to Multi-Channel Sound Manager in control panel. I had some crackling with my ac'97 when I got this computer but was fixed with a couple driver updates. This was slight crackling that was heard during quiet passages.
