Hi The situation is definitely more complex than the difference between .wav and .mp3.
If you have an inferior quality recording of whatever y9ou are playing, the difference between wav and mp3 is not relevant at all. This can possibly be the case with many older recordings coming from the sixties and earlier. I would never e.g. listen to classical music in mp3 format at all - especially modern recordings.
