You may need to change the bit rate etc. When you go into soundforge, close any files which are still open, then open a new file by pressing control n. Tab around the boxes and look at what settings you've got for bit rate. See if it's set to 8 or 16. 16 will give a better quality. Also look at whether you're recording at 11 hrtz or something like that. Try changing to 22.5 which should be ok for speech. See if that improves the quality. The mono/stereo box should be ok on mono for a book. Of course, the higher you make these settings the bigger your recorded file will be.
