I have listened to books recorded at a bitrate as low as 22050HZ at 24K BPS. 
I don't know if it will go much lower than this, because I haven't gotten 
around to trying it yet.

files were supported
in the Victor Classic Plus.  I got a reply indicating that low bit rate 
mp3 files were
supported but not the mp3 point 5 format.
