CDRWIN will also verify its writing.

Gary,

I'd recommend Nero to back up your data files to either CD or DVD. It has a
verify feature that will check that all has been backed up successfully.

I'd still recommend CDEX for ripping though.

Backup data files.
Btw, Really last question: Will any of these softwares do a file compare
test to check transfer accuracy?
Thanks to all.

Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select
from
a
menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
altogether?

Also, just to make thorroughly certain, can it keep tracks separate as
well
as join them? Just want to dot my I's cross T's. I've got everything
downloaded and will take a quick look as soon as I'm finished with this
audio project that's been taking me months. Btw, which of CDRWin,
Extracter, and cdex will handle dvds? Sorry for not asking this
earlier.

Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is
the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

*  it's free
* it's easy to use and fully accessible
* it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year
&
genre
* you can rip to MP3, WAV & a number of other formats
* you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
tracks
to be ripped into a single track
* you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
* you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Well, so far, Nero shows as having the worst tech. support, CDRWin
and
Roxio
answered the most quickly, but Roxio says they have problems with
XP's
Service Pack 2. That leaves CDRWin with only two functions I'd like
to
have
available, but have to figure out other ways to do:
I want to rip all my cds to hard disc and want the tracks labeled
from
the
info on a data base, and I need to figure a way to make mp3s from
wavs.
Thanks for the continued help.

Oh shoot, I'm sorry. You're quite right. Brain cramp. You can
create
a
wave file with CDRWIN and then convert it with something like Gold
Wave.
This is what I do, and because I do it so often, I fused the
procedures
together in my mind. I didn't mean to be confusing.

Easy CDDA Extractor, Gold Wave, CDRWIN, possibly CDEX.
