Kevin!  I haven't actually seen an R-1.  However Edirol has described
it to me and I'm sure it's accessible with its buttons and a jog wheel.  At
least as accessible as the Sony MZB-1 which has been so popular with blind
users.  They warned me that deleting files might be a problem but then you
can do that from the computer.  When the device is connected to the computer
it looks just like an additional hard drive.  I own other Edirol products
and they have buttons, sliders and switches.  There is no loudspeaker.  The
next shipment should be in by Christmas.  Soon enough to get one for that
very special person.
