It really depends on the player itself as to how you would move from folder to folder or track to track.
For example, I had an MP3 CD player that had buttons for advancing by a folder at a time or a track at a time and it determined the folder as the first folder above a bunch of MP3 tracks. I now have a hard disc MP3 player that allows me to navigate by artist, album or tracks or playlists that I've created on the player. I should point out here that these functions are only fully accessible when linked up to my PC but the beauty of the playlists is that you can create your listening preferences in a few playlists that are not difficult to get to when the player isn't hooked up to the PC. The important point is to be sure that your boom box and car stereo actually support MP3 discs and then it's a case of checking out the manual if it's not clear what you need to do to navigate between the folders and tracks.
