I think it was on this list someone posted a question about getting a 
computer-generated voice to read a text file and create an mp3 file with it. I don't 
remember the criteria she listed and didn't read the thread that followed, so this may 
be redundant.

there's another program, readplease, available from www.readplease.com ,
I think for free. There's also a version which creates mp3 files, I think it
costs something.
