Hi Paul, I had sighted assistance for instaling the hardware. Since I don't have a laptop, I can't answer that question with certainty. My guess is that it will function in one though. As far as the sound card acting multi-channel, I think that it may have something to do with the audio cd's file type. Files with the normal cda file extension will play despite the output source. Again I could be wrong about all of this so don't hold me to givving you absolute gospel.
