Found a solution!

It turns out that "Group Datasets" defines a family of partial inverses
called "Extract Block". ("block" = "dataset"???).

Each processed dataset that emerges from the pipeline operating on the
group can be recovered by such an inverse.

The normals are lost in the process, but "Generate Surface Normals" on the
output of each inverse fixes that. And in this step, the display color can
be defined as a "Solid Color" per block/dataset.

The exported 3D output now displays correctly within a browser using the
<inline> tag of <x3d>.
