Mike, I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm for programming on the Palm, but I also don't want to see you dig yourself in a hole and have a bad experience. Your questions lead me to believe you need more grounding in the basics of C development.
The Palm environment is not the best place to learn C/C++. There are a lot of things that you need a good understanding of the language in order to exploit and debugging is more difficult than debugging a PC. I'd suggest you get a good grip on the basics of C programming on your desktop machine first and then start learning the Palm API set after you are comfortable with C on the desktop. Many of the things you learn in desktop C programming are applicable to the Palm, although some are not (namely string handling and file I/O). The official Palm development environment is currently hosted on Eclipse. If you want to pull down the Eclipse IDE and the CDT (C developers toolkit) from eclipse.org, you can start writing C code for your PC. Or you can shell out some bucks for Visual Studio or CodeWarrior. When you are ready for Palm development, you can pull down the Palm OS Developers Suite from the Palmsource.com/developers web site and replace your existing Eclipse with one that will do Palm development.
