There is some sample source code for an application called "IR-Ping" at:

http://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/~harbaum/pilot/ir_ping.html

I've found it invaluable in trying to figure out how to use lower-level I/R
libraries. At least, it gives a concrete example of some of the stuff in the
IrDA specs (required reading if you're going to try to use the libraries;
see links on the above page). And it was fun to use it to walk around and
Discover all of the printers and PDA in my office ("Hey Mike, check out the
hint bits on that unit...")

I'm not sure broadcasting is easily possible using the IrDA stack. I don't
think it will let you Send something without an open connection to another
device.
