You might not need to convert anything.  if you're working with single
bytes, you can manipulate individual bits using a single character in the
string and the standard bitwise operators (&,|,^,etc). (works best with
unsigned characters)

MyChar[0] = (MyChar[1] & 0x0F) << 0x10;        // Works for me
