Hi David,

Ethernet cradles have some intelligence built-in; they usually request an IP
address from
a DHCP server on the LAN (or have one statically configured), and issue that
address
when the Palm device does a PPP connection to it.

All Ethernet devices have a MAC (hardware) address and, assuming TCP/IP, an
IP address.  In the case of your Ethernet device, the "base station" has the
MAC
address and is responsible for obtaining the IP address for the Palm.
