Back when Win CE first started out (Version 1.0?), MS did offer a free
time limited Win CE development program. It basically modified VC 5.0
(4.0 as well?) to be able to generate Win CE code. It's been years
since I tried it out ... I don't even remember if it had a
debugger/emulator.

I did order the $15 system that MS offers for Win CE development but
haven't found the time to actually load it in and actually see what if
anything it does :-) I do remember MS offering assorted Win CE
development kits (VBasic, VC based) with full compilers and they were
going for $300 IIRC.

To be sure I would like extra speed, better sound and more memory,
however I've gotten the impression that comparing the IPaq's speed and
memory to that of Palm is more like comparing apples to oranges.
Palms seem to get a lot more done with less resources. Perhaps its
due to Palm's simpler interface, but it doesn't seem to need as much
horsepower to give the user sufficient feedback. IIRC Win CE has to
divide up its RAM into storage and execution, while Palms can run in
place, so Win CEs need more RAM.

I just started programming with VFDIDE (very nice, thanks Ole!) and
very much appreciated the installation instructions on Ole's website.
The only thing that I had to do was to 'umount' and 'mount' to fix up
a couple of the mounts that were setup incorrectly. I used the Color
Development variation, but I can (and do) program for the older SDKs
(mainly Version 2.0). Give it another try. A lot of people
(including myself) highly recommend it.
