$SUBJECT happens on more than one installation using TDE, and is not a
problem in KDE3 or KDE4 in 13.2 or with KDE3 in 42.1. Does the VLC build for
42.1 depend on something from QT5 rather than entirely from QT4? All the
"required" VLC "QT" deps seem to be satisfied. Does it seem more likely some
brokenness in TDE?
In TDE on Debian Stretch, running qtconfig-qt4 solved the same problem, and
put a fonts entry in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf matching the TDE font size.
I'm having no luck finding a VLC log to look for clues. :-(
