Dejan, I've removed the symbolic link and done a su - and it now works like a charm :-)
I am probably to blame as the tutorial actually mentions using su - (http://www.clusterlabs.org/doc/en-US/Pacemaker/1.1/html-single/Clusters_from_Scratch/#_cluster_software_installation) Many thanks for your help.
