Hi there! Is anyone familiar with these umbrellas, made from cigarette wrappers, chopsticks, toothpicks, and string?:
https://pdxpursuit.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/532/ …there are a few mentions of these being created by Japanese-Americans during WWII in internment camps in the States. I also found an article about Roy Abo, who was hoping to set a world record by folding the most of these umbrellas. There’s a picture of the template and some of the units, but it’s not detailed enough to figure it out (or, rather, for *me* to figure it out): https://www.idahoseniorindependent.com/origami-artist-roy-abo/ …the article also mentions a lantern, which I’d also love to know about! It looks like when Mr Abo died (at 95!!) in February of this year, he had surpassed his goal of 5000 umbrellas by 1000! Way to go, Mr Abo!: https://www.hansen-mortuary.com/obituary/Roy-Abo …according to the obit, he gave away almost all of what he made and his work is still around in the local area; what a lovely, unplanned memorial! I’ve looked on YouTube and didn’t find anything. Google only yielded photos of completed models, either for sale or in private collections. Anyone know of a source for instructions? Anyone know about the lantern? Anyone ever meet Mr Abo (not just about the umbrellas, he sounded like an interesting person!)? Please and thank you and enjoy the rest of your day! -sarah
