*Scope of Work*:



The Network Planning Architect evaluates and recommends networking
architectures, designs, technologies, equipment, and practices to best
accomplish Frontier’s product goals.

He or she will roadmap the implementation of network technologies, evaluate
and test new technologies, set standards and practices for consistent
application of technologies, integrate new networks and services from
company acquisitions, manage technology lifecycles, and publish reference
documentation in support of those ends.

The Network Planning Architect is vendor-agnostic and must think
systemically.

He or she must be able to evaluate from the perspective of the best
solution for the complete end-to-end system and all supporting
organizations, as opposed to evaluating solely for the betterment of a
specific sub-system.

He or she will work with product development, sales, marketing,
engineering, operations, and other network planning teams to create a
cohesive, integrated, and modern network for Frontier’s customers.

This position is primarily responsible for planning routing, switching, and
other networking technologies within customer-facing data centers and
adjacent networks.

These data centers and networks focus on the origination and delivery of
Frontier triple-play services such as Frontier TV, U-verse, FiOS, VoIP, and
High-Speed Internet supporting systems (DNS, NTP, etc.).

This position reports to the Manager of Centralized Network Planning.



*% of time Responsibilities: *



40%>>> Coordinate across organizational boundaries to develop a cohesive
end-to-end network architecture. Plan and support the deployment of new
technologies or services across the network through the creation of network
architectural changes, standards, and practices. Keep abreast of industry
developments. Research future technologies.

30%>>> Plan and document network standards in response to triple-play
product requirements, feature enhancements, or equipment lifecycle events.
Author documents such as Reference Architecture, High-Level Design (HLD),
Engineering Guidelines (EGL), Provisioning Guidelines (PGL), and Security
Guidelines (SGL)

20%>>> Develop test plans and coordinate testing of specific vendor
equipment to meet requirements. Perform evaluations on new equipment.
Create configurations for routers, switches, test equipment, and related
systems in a Lab environment for purposes of establishing network-wide
standards

10%>>> Provide post-mortem support for operational issues. Evaluate
modifications to network standards and publish advisories




*Job Requirements*



Should include all necessary qualifications to perform the full job.



1. Kind and length of experience: Eight or more years of experience
performing hands-on network design, configuration, and troubleshooting of
data center and service provider networks with at least:

• Two or more years in a telco/cable provider technology or planning
organization (i.e. network architecture, capacity management, deployment
planning, or evaluating and testing new technologies)

• Two or more years working in triple-play subscriber networks, video head
ends, or data centers supporting similar services NOTE: ISP
(Telco/Cable/Satellite Broadband) experience is mandatory. A qualified
candidate should have:

• Expert-level knowledge and experience with at least one of the following
routing and switching platforms: o Alcatel 7x50 Service Routers o Juniper
MX or E Series o Cisco IOS/IOS-XR high-end routers and switches (i.e.,
6500, 7600, Nexus, ASR)

• Experience in triple-play service network environments such as Video Hub
Office (VHO), Super-Hub Office, or other customer-facing data centers

• Strong experience designing and configuring QoS/CoS for multi-play
service provider offerings

• Strong experience with service provider routing and switching protocols
and technologies (BGP, OSPF, MPLS/VPLS, VRF/VPN, PIM, STP) • Experience
working with any multicast or next-generation Video delivery technologies
(IPTV, ABR HLS, etc.) • Experience with Web technologies and protocols
(HTTP, SSL, HTML, etc.) • Experience with methods and tools for stress
testing of networks and related equipment • Experience with packet/protocol
fault analysis for common IP and Ethernet protocols using network traces or
sniffer captures

• Knowledge of PON fiber or xDSL copper access technologies



*Any of the following experience is desired/preferred:*


 • Experience with QAM-based cable systems

 • Experience configuring and maintaining content delivery systems such as
caches, streamers, origin servers, request routing systems, load balancers,
log aggregation systems, etc. desired

• Experience with TV middleware systems (Mediaroom, Medios, Rovi, IMG,
etc.)

• Familiarity with internet caching technologies and/or global CDNs
(Akamai, LimeLight, EdgeCast, etc.)

• Familiarity with Windows and Linux system administration and related tools

 • Familiarity with programming and/or a working knowledge of scripting
languages used in UNIX and Web systems

• Familiarity with configuring common Internet services and applications
(Web, DNS, SFTP, etc.)



2. Special Skills (e.g., strong organizational skills, proficiency on
specific software): Proficient in network design and engineering including:

 • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills associated with
the planning, design, and implementation of video delivery on broadband
subscriber networks in service provider environments

• Ability to work in a lab environment, perform hands-on configuration of
network equipment, define test plans, and execute/supervise tests or
testing teams to meet requirements.

• Strong Microsoft Visio, Word, PowerPoint skills

• Presentation and training skills including the ability to clearly present
technical material



*3. Education, certification and/or license requirements:*


BSEE, BSCS, BSET or 8 or more years equivalent experience in a
technical/engineering field Any of the following technical certifications
are strongly desired:

 • Alcatel-Lucent Service Routing Certification (SRC) o Triple Play Routing
Professional (3RP) o Service Routing Architect (SRA)

• Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional/Expert (JNCIP/JNCIE-M,
SP, ENT)

 • Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) This position requires
occasional operation of a company fleet vehicle. The candidate must have
and maintain a valid state driver’s license.



4. Physical Requirements (i.e., extended periods of sitting, bending,
stooping, standing, walking or driving; frequency of lifting or carrying
heavy objects - specify required weight; required communication skills -
verbal/auditory): This position requires the person to physically install
and cable common network and server equipment in typical telecommunications
and data center racks. The person must be able to bend, stand, kneel,
stoop, and reach (including overhead) while operating simple tools. The
person must be able to lift, push, and carry materials up to 40lbs. This
position requires public speaking and presentation skills with suitable
proficiency in English to be clearly understood while presenting detailed
technical material to an audience of peers, management, partners, vendors,
and/or customers.



5. Environmental Factors (e.g., ability to work in extreme heat/cold,
ability to work at heights over 15 feet, ability to work 3rd shift, ability
to work weekends/on-call): The position requires occasional extended work
in and around a typical data center, telecommunications facility, and/or
Central Office. These environments may include loud machinery/fan noise,
chilled temperatures and wind, and lowered humidity. These environments
require working with and around high-amperage AC and DC power
