Hello OPNFV/CNTT TSC,

Al and I have been discussing the need for Airship RI lab hardware budget for
the next year. After collecting information from various sources, here is a
preliminary proposal for the Airship OPNFV/CNTT lab hardware for the next year
that I would like to get your comments and feedback.

CNTT RI-1 (OpenStack Airship V1.8):

* Affected: Intel POD 15, 17 and 18 (Check with Spirent and Intel for
their Airship usage of POD 10)

* RAM: upgrade to 192 GB

o Currently 64GB. Seen a lot of stability/performance issues in Airship 1.7
deployment after it runs for a few days or weeks. Already significantly reduced
the pod replicas and memory/cpu usage. Airship 1.8 POC has seen even more
resource related issues.

* Disks: currently two disks, one for OS, one for Nova VMs. Need
additional dedicated Ceph disk(s) for worker nodes. Directory based Ceph has
been deprecated.

* Network: Need to add cables to the port #3 and #4 on the 10G NIC
(05:00.2 and 05:00.3). These two are to be used for DPDK bond. Port #1 and #2
are already used for Calico, overlay, storage and routable networks.

* Just for comparison, WWT lab (an Intel/Dell/ATT lab for upstream
Airship gate) has 64x2 CPUs, 384GB RAM and 8 disks for the Ceph, per server.

CNTT RI-2 (OpenStack Airship 2.0)

* Minimum two new pods for development and CI.

*         Requires Redfish API

o Upstream AS 2.0 has been tested against Dell Redfish. If other vendors'
servers are used, additional testing and potentially new plugin in Upstream AS
2.0 needs to be planned.

* Prefer to have Calico BGP peering at the TOR switch (Intel Infra
raised security concerns to allow the traffic from hosts to the internal switch
in their DC)

o Otherwise, contribution is required in upstream AS 2.0 to add Calico Mesh
support

* Similar RAM/CPU/Disks/Network spec as for AS 1.8.

* The RC-2 (conformance testing) CNF workloads are still TBD based on
the input from Cedric. The worker node spec may need to change when RC-2 is
solidified.

Thanks,

James
