Thanks Alec. That was my whole point. We have standardized (after lengthy
discussions) on IRC – and with tools like irccloud, IRC is pretty useable.
If we want to change the tool – fine. But we should have one and not several
tools – otherwise you divide the community which is worse than using “the wrong
tool”.

Cheers, Frank

+1

“A bit more user friendly” is an understatement.
I’ve been around quite a bit and I’m personally allergic to IRC. I was
disappointed about IRC use when I started to interact with OPNFV about 5y ago.
We need to realize that the new generation of younger developers tends to favor
more modern tools and imposing the use of IRC could discourage some talents…
CNCF is a great community made of both experienced and new developers and they
did not chose IRC for a reason.

However I’m not sure how meetings could conduct their interaction on IRC *and*
Slack at the same time, so it is not as simple to please both crowds.

IRC is great tool with lots of (often arcane) capabilities and we may have some
people who would stick to IRC and hate Slack, but I think we need to adapt to
the new world 😉

Just my $0.02

  Alec

To address this further, we're not suggesting deprecation of IRC, but in our
interactions with other communities, including the cloud native groups that
make heavy use of Slack, we thought it could be useful to look at trying out
another tool. It's certainly a bit more user friendly than IRC. It also
provides opportunities to have multiple channels, including community building
and "water cooler" type channels.

I know certainly in our internal LFN use of Slack, we've found it very helpful
to keep in touch, particularly right now when we're all working remotely and
quarantined at home.

If it's not useful, we don't have to use it, but it is fairly easy to make a
workspace available, so we thought we'd try it out.

Cheers,
Heather

Jim,

Why do we need slack (which is a great tool) given that we have and
standardized on IRC?

Thanks, Frank
