Hi, you're supposed to use "iw" with modern mac80211.
To spawn a real monitor interface: iw phy phy0 interface add mon0 type monitor; ifconfig mon0 up See also http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw It is certainly not required to recompile the driver.
