Have you checked on Linux 3.0 ? It seems to me that many drivers have been moved (serial went to drivers/serial/tty or something like that) and so on.

Also, I would have checked the linux kernel version out of the package definitions and set a GPIODIR variable to either "/gpio" or "/char", depending on the kernel version. Something like this would be useful anyway when dealing with drivers that move from staging to non-staging.
